Viagra is the brand-name version of sildenafil, a powerful drug that increases blood flow to the penis so men can get and maintain an erection. It’s commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction, and although it’s considered relatively safe, it does leave some effects on the body.
As June is Men’s Health Month, we at Focus: Meds Pharmacy and Wellness are going over the different effects of Viagra on the body to help men make better, more informed decisions about the medication they take.
The Circulatory System
Viagra is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and can reach maximum concentrations within an hour. Thus, one of its more common side effects is flushing, or redness.
It can also cause a drop in blood pressure, particularly 1 or 2 hours after taking it. If you’re someone who already has low blood pressure, talk to your doctor about taking Viagra before starting.
The Reproductive System
Although Viagra can be effective, it’s no magic pill. It doesn’t affect the libido and users still need some kind of stimulation to achieve an erection.
One very rare but serious side effect of taking Viagra is priapism. This is when a man gets an erection that lasts for a long period of time.
If our erection lasts for more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention.
