What is Compounding?
Compounding is the preparation of a customized medication to meet a specific patient need. During the process of compounding, medications are produced from ingredients that are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. By providing these compounded medications, we are able to directly and more effectively treat and manage disease states and deliver custom forms of medication dosages and applications that are not available commercially.
What We Do
Our specially trained pharmacists at Focus: Meds Pharmacy and Wellness have the ability to make medications for a variety of situations in a variety of different forms. Our compounding services range from producing the patient-specific dosing that your doctor prescribes to flavoring medications for children.
Our compounding pharmacists work together with our patients and their prescribers to develop the most appropriate individualized therapy. For example, if a patient is unable to take medication orally, we may be able to place the needed medication into a transdermal gel that will allow the drug to be absorbed through the skin. This customized medication could prevent the need to be hospitalized to receive a medication that is only manufactured in oral and injectable forms.
Some individuals are unable to take a commercial product because it contains a dye, sugar, alcohol or lactose. We can solve the problem by compounding a customized dosage form that contains the needed medication but not the problem-causing additive. If a patient needs a reduced strength of medication or is unable to swallow a tablet, we can compound a pleasantly flavored liquid that can be easily administered.
We not only make medications for humans, but also for many of our animal friends. We work with veterinarians and pet owners to prepare prescriptions for dogs, cats, birds, and more. We understand that pets have special needs and taste requirements, and we are here for all of their needs as well.
